toilet bowl, the old way

Came across this bucket that was drying out in the sun. According to the local students, it is a toilet bowl. The manual kind, where you had to dip the contents into a collecting bin somewhere far away like every week or something. Its still in use apparently, although i've yet to encounter one so far.

picking strawberries and a side trip to 梅镇

We went to pick strawberries on Sunday. We called people we know in the class to come along, however due to several work commitments and what not, only 2 person came along in the end. So there was me, Yanjie, Pika, Samantha, Yao Shan Shan and Han Tian Shu...
Strawberry farm, and us. The farm was at 建德市,which is the place where they produce strawberries.
Strawberries that are just forming
Strawberry flower
Weird shaped strawberries? We saw lots of different shapes of strawberries. The variety that we tasted supposedly had a buttery taste to it (奶油香味). However it was lost on me. It just tasted sweet and juicy... no hint of butter anywhere.
fields of flowers. Its blooming everywhere now. I think the name is called 油菜花。
Rice fields?
梅镇 kind of a 古镇 i think. however its not really a tourist kind of place.
within the residential area
view of the opposite bank of the river. The pagoda looked like it had trees growing out of the top of the tower.

And so, that concludes our sunday trip to a strawberry farm, and picking strawberries.

umbrella factory visit

Today we went on a visit to a umbrella producing factory in the city. That's the parts for the telescopic handle of the collapsible umbrella.

Saw the massiveness of the scale of operation within the factory. Its more like a place to assemble the umbrella. The workers there are super fast, can't even see properly what they are actually doing and the parts are assembled already. The process starts from assembling the handles first, then slowly building up to the frame. The canopy of the umbrella is sewn together, then fixed to the frame manually.

There's even a competition to come up with new and innovative ideas for umbrella design. Be it to sell, or use, or manufacture. Its pretty open. Guess Tayllen would be more interested judging from the year 2 project.

foods of our lives

A look into the kinds of food we ate here. An exchange student's diet.

cream puff, or 泡芙。 cream puff without air.. like the normal cream puff we encountered at home consists of puff, custard and air. while this one we ate has only puff and cream. Its practically oozing out cream when i bit into it. very sinful..
蛋饼 a mixture of egg and some sort of a very thin layer of pancake. Filling consists of 咸菜,some 葱, and a few choices of meat, lotus roots, sausage... plus either sweet, savory or spicy sauce. All mixed together and rolled up.

A typical student's diet in the university. At least for the 蛋饼. All in 紫金港。。。

要买自行车吗?

Went to get a secondhand bicycle from the east station in Hangzhou. Can say that it is certainly a shady business judging from the way they conduct it. There were no shop fronts, and the people were kind of like touts asking random people whether they want to buy bicycles. But amusingly no one wanted to approach us when we arrived, cos hearing from the local students there should be people asking from the moment we arrived. We had to walk round the station and out of it in order to look for the bikes.

In the end we settled for a couple of decent looking bikes, 2 for 250. And we rode it back to our school campus...

weekend to Shanghai (21,22-03-2009) food special

This long queue sparked my curiosity to what is being sold... Cos the people are queuing in orderly fashion. I assumed the food should be very good, and decided to try some.
Food being prepared in front of everyone.
小杨生煎 very juicy and meaty. Its nice with the black vinegar

chocolate mousse from a bread deli in 南站。 apparently its the more decent dessert out of the 3 kinds that we bought in the shopping centre.

There was not much opportunity to try out more funky foods... Just that the circumstances leading me to try the 小杨生煎 was interesting...

weekend to Shanghai (22-03-2009) III

Sunday's Shanghai. We decided to take a look at the Shanghai Science and Technological museum. So we took a metro line and crossed the 黄浦江 to the other side... 浦东.

Shots of the museum interior and exterior. It certainly gives off the techno vibes. However we did not make it inside eventually due to a couple of reasons. The price was too steep and the content of the exhibitions were none too appealing.
A random pillar stuck to the walls of a colonial styled Shanghai Art Museum. It looked like part of a chinese building, taken out and transplanted. I wonder why...

Next stop was the Shanghai Art Museum. Its certainly less expensive. We tried getting discount tickets using our student pass. However there was a distinction between our status and that of the local students. The service staff were very sharp in pointing that out. :( In the end we had to settle for the normal priced adult tickets. Not too bad... it was only 20rmb.
Entrance to the museum
The interior was very spacious.

stairs leading to the upper floors
The surroundings of the art museum.
And then we tried looking for this indie design place which Yanjie read about on the net. So here's parts of the places we went through before reaching the destination.
A peek into the residential estates of people living in Shanghai
A primary school
Shophouses
What does this building remind you of?
We finally reached the destination of the indie design place... Its at 永康路
Kind of like this signboard.
A very old styled kind of district in which the indie shop things are. It certainly has the arty vibes going on.
Its a maze in there. However there were more cafes and bars than design stuff though. So it was quite disappointing as I was hoping to see what kind of indie design stuff there was on offer..
上海南站。 the place where we go back to hangzhou

weekend to Shanghai (21-03-2009) II

Since it was close to evening, we decided to hang around the Bund area to catch the night scene of Shanghai as it was heavily recommended by almost everyone...

A shop selling fish..

Around the back streets leading towards the Bund area, it became more lively. There were people doing their market shopping in the night. Thought it was quite interesting to me as I've only encountered people shopping in the morning...

vegetables laid out on the street
hawkers preparing food
浦东 at night
colourful ships/ferries lighted at night

Touristy shot of myself against the Shanghai skyline

The Bund sideColonial era building at night
Thought the lines of light on the ship is quite a nice effect
Contrast against the bund in the day

More random shots of the Shanghai night scene
皇城庙,the surroundings.. as the temple was closed by the time we ambled there...
sights around the temple

南京步行街 at night. We adjourned to a KTV in the area and sang the night away...

The night was rather misty. Therefore there was a reddish tinge to the night sky at the bund area...
